Avoid!! - At the behest of other friends I have 'not' eaten here in the past couple of weeks. Why? Because the food is pretty much inedible and starters and main course on both occasions have been left pretty much untouched. It's an expensive glass of wine when all you can do is look at food you just can't quite literally stomach too much of and watching it going back to the kitchen. As for complaining or challenging, I've been here before at The Wheatsheaf in both senses of the word. Complaining draws blank looks or an offer of more ghastly food served after everyone else has finished their meals. Challenging? ... where to begin? Not a clue about why the food is not acceptable. We eat here very sporadically only as a matter of convenience as locals when we have elderly relatives staying or friends who think it's OK'ish. It suits them and hasn't been too ghastly up until recently. Certainly not enjoyable. The past two meals have offered:- Halloumi as a starter. So much oil and as a result heavy going. Garlic Mushrooms. Heavy on the black pepper fried in what can only be yesterday's burned butter served on a slice of Sunblest. They don't even bother with cutting the 'toasted bread' into sections. Just mushrooms topped onto a slice of heavily oiled white bread. Fish and Chips. A burned batter shell surrounding desiccated fish, flesh totally dried up inside. How can you get that so wrong? Lasagna, surely you can't go wrong with lasagna. Served with a burnt crust of cheap catering cheese hiding (once it had cooled down to palatable - 10-15 mins) layers and layers of pasta! I poked around and found about 2 tsps worth of meat. Liquid coleslaw. Garlic ciabatta was just saturated butter. The only healthy bit the salad was sloshed again in oil. Yes it's cheap, we know and you accept it for what it is. But the standard of food after several years here is pushing 'good value' to the limit. Just to round off the evening as my friend went to pay the bill I realised that I had problems lifting one of my feet, then both my feet. Stuck to the carpet! A member of the kitchen staff then poked his head out from the kitchen door asking for a drink and looking at his clothing, I was rather glad I had had very little to eat. The only positive was the waiting staff were lovely. Shame the food wasn't. No professional chef or anyone with any care or pride would be sending out this standard of food.

Thwaites Pubs 1st Bad Review ... VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED - We had passed this place many times so decided to give it a try.we were told that we would have to go upstairs to the first floor..I have to say that first impressions last and i definatly was'nt impressed.. The room was bland and not welcoming at all.Seemed to me like it had been thrown together as a last resort with all the table and chairs being miss-matched and the one we were placed at had seats of different heights which was awkward to say the least being at totally different levels while eating..It would have been nice if they had the windows cleaned once in a while as they were very dirty and had obviously not been done for some time. Our Dinners eventually arrived on considerably small plates..The dinner was also piled up and resembled a pyramid ?.The yorkshire puddings were very dry.The roast potatoes tasted old and warmed up.I was only given 1 forkfull of cabbage and barely a tablespoon of gravy.I would definatly have considered these child size meals and NOT worth the £10.95 each we payed for them I am being very honest in my review and i can say that i most definatly would never return there..I am not posh...or middle class either but in my opinion no matter what walk of life your from or what your used to i'm more than sure that you'd be dissapointed unless they change their business practices..The strange thing is after looking at the reviews on this place you'd believe it was a place to make a bee-line for...I just wish people could be more honest or be able to leave contact details so you could speak in person about your finds and experiences...Oh yeah.... i forgot to mention that this is the first time we have EVER been for sunday lunch and left feeling hungry and headed for chester city center for food..Well there's a saying 'live and learn'..... and we have.
Thwaites Pubs 2nd Bad Review ... Abysmal - We went for Sunday lunch on 28th July, 5 adults. We all chose the roast dinner, big mistake! The food was tepid. Beef was dry and crispy at the edge indicating it had been kept on a hot plate or under heat lamps, gravy was sickly sweet, roast potatoes were rock hard and once I managed to actually cut through they were grey inside, they looked as though they were last weeks potatoes kept warm, Yorkshire pudding was the size of a hat but tasted nothing like it should have. The only part of the meal that was edible was the root mash, shame that was also cold. On the plus side, rhubarb crumble was tasty and HOT! I did express my dissatisfaction to the waitress and offered to invite the chef to my home where I could teach them how to cook roast potatoes, she apologised but she shouldn’t have to apologise for somebody else. I also reiterated my thoughts to the lady who took our payment, perhaps the bar manager, but she was not overly concerned about my complaint. Wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone, if you want a cheap roast there are plenty of other pubs serving great food, even their ‘sister’ pub in Irby (Shippons)
Thwaites Pubs 3rd Bad Review ... Oh Dear Urgent Improvement Needed - having been told by friends that they thought standards have improved we visited again on Tuesday, the greeting was quite warm & friendly to be positive. We ordered all our starters only to be told 'oh you can't have that we haven't got any gluten free bread' the waitress was quite flippant & clearly viewed as a bit of a joke. An alternative was ordered along with main courses. The pate starters came - the toast was burnt & black, the starters at best were passable. The main courses were a disasters the lasagnes were merely mince with cheese on the top & a hint of pasta, disgusting the chips were very poor quality, underdone & anaemic, the salad wasn't much better. All in all a shameful customer experience that the waitress was not interested or competent in dealing with.
